Using information from Infield Systems’ Offshore Energy Database of all global oil and gas fields and developments, this new activity map is a “must have” for anyone in the industry who wants to keep abreast of changes in this dynamic region.
The South and East African region has emerged as an important hydrocarbon province and an area with great potential for LNG development and as such is expected to see a significant increase in capital expenditure over the next few years. Indeed, the Republic of South Africa has the largest number of potential fields to bring on-stream in the region, most of which are small satellite tie-back fields situated in the predominantly shallow water Mossel Bay area. However, despite this, the country will be far surpassed by both Mozambique and Tanzania in terms of projected development expenditure Capex. A high proportion of the fields anticipated to be developed in Mozambique and Tanzania are located in water depths over 1,000 metres and, as such, have long development lead times. They include Anadarko’s Prosperidade and Eni’s Mamba/Coral projects in Mozambique and the Block 1-4 projects in Tanzania operated by BG and Statoil. Developing fields in deep water environments creates a number of technical challenges, which ultimately increases the level of Capex needed.
Activity and interest in this region is forecast to remain high for the foreseeable future.
